Who doesn’t get the recognition they deserve?

Engineers and Scientists

I feel like these people are the ones who really affect millions of people’s lives and change the world but they are not famous or acknowledged.

For example.. everyone knows Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Elon Musk

But these guys were all businessmen, they were not the actual engineers working on the products that made them famous.

In 1947, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain invented the transistor, an invention which had a profound impact on all of our lives. Without the transistor, we wouldn’t have modern electronics as we know it. No smartphones, no laptops, no desktops, no calculators, medical, video or audio equipment, internet etc

after them in the 1950s, Mohamed Atalia and Dawon Kahng invented the MOSFET, the most widely used transitor.

Robert Noyce, while he didn’t invent the first IC (that was Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments), he did invent the first monolithic integrated circuit chip in 1959 and the first integrated IC to be mass produced. He co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel Corporation – the basis of what is now known as “Silicon Valley”

At Intel in 1969–1970, Ted Hoff invented the microprocessor and his colleague Federico Faggin designed the world’s first commercially produced microprocessors, the Intel 4004, Intel 8008, and Intel 8080. He also designed the Zilog Z80. These microprocessors were responsible for the creation of the microcomputer (PC) industry in the 1970s.

In the 1970s, Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson were the developers of the Unix operating system and C programming language. Unix and C had profound influence on the development of all operating systems and programming languages (and by extension software) since.

Also in the 1970s, Gary Kildall invented CP/M, a very influential early operating system and basically kickstarted the software industry.

Suffice to say that all of our computers and software would not exist as it does now without these guys. Both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates owe some of their success to these guys, but they are much lesser known.

These are just some examples of some guys that are not that well known yet had profound influence in our everyday lives. You would not be using a phone or computer or reading Quora right now without the work that these guys did, and yes I realize they do get recognition amongst engineering and computer science circles, but they are not widely known by the mass public.
