What is your GOTY (video game of the year) for 2022?

So far it seems the GOTY candidates – two stand out above all – Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok

For me, it’s Elden Ring and it’s not even close.

Elden Ring is a massive improvement upon it’s predecessors Dark Souls, Sekiro and Bloodborne and improves upon them all by offering up the same solid gameplay mechanics found in those games (which were already great games to begin with) but adding in a vast open world that you can explore at your own pace and leisure, inspired by games like Breath of the Wild and Monster Hunter World. This sense of exploration vastly improves the game, adding more content, and rewards your curiosity at every step. In addition to all that, George R.R Martin’s writing improves the previous (almost nonexistent) story of FromSoft’s games, albeit still not great.

God of War: Ragnarok is just an extension of 2018 God of War – it’s a linear storyline, with lots of cinematic cutsenes, looks very pretty and has a smattering of combat and quick time events here and there. While the storyline and visuals are of course better than Elden Ring, the world and the gameplay is not even close to Elden Ring. You just follow point A to point B, do some combat here and there and just follow the scripted storyline and action.

Here me and my brother finally defeat the second to last boss of Elden Ring – in 116 tries! Yes that’s right this game got me involved enough to try 116 times.. God of War Ragnarok would not get that of out me. There’s just so much more skill involved in Elden Ring.

and trust me as a Youtuber who’s played over 1500 games on my channel (including GoW Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Pokemon Legends Arceus and many others) – Elden Ring is the GOTY and it’s not that close. Elden Ring is for me, one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. It’s up there with Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Super Mario 64, Persona 5, GTA 5 etc it’s a masterpiece.
