Michael Jordan vs his toughest defenders

Michael Jordan is considered by many to be one of the greatest if not the greatest scorer of all time. Forget his 30.1 PPG scoring average and his 33 PPG playoff scoring average (both #1 all time), forget his 10 scoring titles, forget that he was still averaging 28 – 30 PPG when the league’s pacing was at its lowest in the mid to late 90s, let’s just take a look at how well he did against some of the greatest defensive guards of all time, many of whom played in Jordan’s era.

  • 31.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 47.3% FG% 2.7 TOV in 48 games versus Joe Dumars in his career.

  • 34.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 50.2% FG%, 3.0 TOV in 21 games versus Dennis Johnson in his career.

  • 31.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 52.7% FG%, 3.4 TOV in 22 games versus Sidney Moncrief in his career.

  • 34.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 54.5% FG%, 3.1 TOV in 36 games versus Maurice Cheeks in his career.

  • 34.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 54.3% FG%, 2.8 TOV in 30 games versus Alvin Robertson in his career.

  • 31.2 points, 6.2 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 47.4% FG%, 4.0 TOV in 9 games versus Michael Cooper in his career.

  • 30.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 47.0% FG%, 2.4 TOV in 15 games versus Gary Payton in his career.

  • 32.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 50.9% FG%, 2.6 TOV in 25 games versus Mookie Blaylock in his career.

  • 30.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 50.8% FG%, 3.0 TOV in 39 games versus Gerald Wilkins in his career.

  • 30.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 49.8% FG%, 2.5 TOV in 17 games versus Vernon Maxwell in his career.

  • 32.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 47.4% FG%, 2.3 TOV in 26 games versus John Stockton in his career.

  • 31.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 46.7% FG%, 2.2 TOV in 24 games versus John Starks in his career.

Jordan never averaged below his career average even when facing even some of the most toughest defensive guards ever.

So safe to say, there was no defending this man. You could be 9x All-Def or be a 2x DPOY and you’re still not holding Jordan to below his career average.
