Magic the Gathering: Top 10 greatest black cards of all time

Ranking basketball players, now ranking magic cards, with some commentary as well :). I’m starting off with the black color. Black is home to some of the most powerful cards ever printed in magic, as it is the most versatile color; black cards can do anything… often for a price. Here is my top ten:

10. Thoughtseize
Probably the greatest discard card next to 9. on the list, its great because its simple. 2 life for any nonland card. Fair trade right?

9. Hymn to Tourach
Only two mana and I get to choose two cards at random, its quite unfair. This card single handedly wrecks control decks; it is probably the most efficient discard card ever printed.

8. Imperial Seal
Any card that tutors any card for 1 mana and a minimal drawback is broken. Nuff said.

7. Dark Confidant
“Bob” is truly one of the best creatures that Magic has ever seen. An efficient beater, low cost for only 1B, and card advantage that he gives you is amazing. He dominated many formats, and will continue to be used as long as he is legal. The trick is that 33%+ of your deck is land, meaning that often you don’t take any damage at all.

6. Yawgmoth’s Bargain
Supposedly, this is a fix for Necropotence, but it ended up being insane as well. Turns out, there’s lots of ways to accelerate your mana to pay for 4BB, and once this comes out, your opponent is screwed. 1 life for 1 card is NOT a fair deal.

5. Necropotence
The skull has dominated many tournaments since its introduction. For a mere BBB, a player can now exchange life for cards – almost always a good deal. And often times, it comes down on the first turn, thanks to the next card…

4. Dark Ritual
Hard to imagine, but this card is only a common. Paying one black mana to receive three black mana has allowed for numerous combos throughout Magic’s history, especially combo’ed with such cards as Hypnotic Specter and Necropotence for numerous wins.

3. Demonic Tutor
So, I pay 1B and I get any card from my library? Sweet. Great card. Too bad it is also banned/restricted everywhere its legal.

2. Vampiric Tutor
It’s a tutor for only one black mana! And I get to search my library for any card! and its instant speed! This and Demonic Tutor are probably interchangeable, as both are insane broken cards.

1. Yawgmoth’s Will
The most powerful black card ever printed. It’s banned and restricted everywhere that its legal. Why? because you can replay all your 0 mana artifacts, black lotuses, ancestral recalls, and the rest of your graveyard over again, all for a measly 3 mana. Insanely powerful, but most people won’t see its full power playing Modern. It truly becomes broken in Vintage.
