She was a very talented actress, known to most Koreans since a young age when she starred in the famous film Man from Nowhere and probably one of the most famous child actresses. She continued doing work in many Korean dramas since and was widely beloved until she got into a DUI incident in 2022 where she took out a power transformer and ended up costing people a lot of damage in liabilities.
Because of Korea’s unforgiving cancel culture, she was blackballed from the entertainment industry after this incident and Netflix cancelled her causing her to breach her contract with her agency and thus causing her to owe hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to her agency. She had to work part time jobs to make ends meet following this.
However, unlike Western celebrities, Korean celebrities often don’t get second chances and she was prevented from being able to come back to the industry following this incident and she passed away recently Feb 16, 2025 from an apparent suicide at age 24.
It’s a tragic and heartbreaking end to a promising young actress and reflects how harsh and unfair Korean society can be to celebrities (another young Korean actress and singer Sulli died from suicide as a result of bullying as well in 2019).
I always followed her instagram hoping for a comeback, which now cannot be fulfilled, so my heart aches and I am both sad and upset at what happened to her. She was bullied even from a very young age to her status as a celebrity since she was young.
However there is something a bit more curious about her case of suicide that I might just be speculating about. She apparently had completed work on a recent movie called Guitar Man that was supposed to be her comeback film and was excited for it to be released. She also told her friends she had plans to start a cafe. There were no apparent indications that she was in a depressed or suicidal mood, shocking her friends when they heard the news. In addition she was supposed to meet a friend the day that she died, and her dead body was discovered by her friend when she didn’t show up. There was no suicide note left either. The timing of the suicide is a bit strange. I know everyone suspects suicide because of all the bullying following her DUI incident but this happened over 2.5 years after that incident and just following a scheduled comeback movie that she just finished filming for. It’s a bit strange, really. I have a feeling that it might actually have been an accidental death, but that’s just me speculating. Nobody really knows what went on in her mind the moments before her death, but the timing just seems odd to me.
