  • Are online reviews trustworthy? Why?

In general you should take online reviews of anything with a grain of salt. Because everyone’s experiences vary.

I’ll speak to many examples because I’m interested in a lot of hobbies – guitar, audio equipment, electronics, video games, movies

Guitar/Amp reviews are like reading or watching someone else’s opinion about a piece of clothing. I feel guitars and amps are highly personal to people and you really have to try out a guitar and have it in your hands, and then play that amp with it in front of you to really know if you like it or not. A person’s review of a guitar or amp is really just going to be colored by that person’s own personal preference of that sound. And the level of comfort and playability is completely dependent on person. You have to really feel the neck in your hands, it’s not something easily described online or through a video. Guitar/Amp reviews are sort of trustworthy – if their preferences match yours.

Speaker/Headphone reviews are even more subjective because everyone hears differently and has different ears. These are amongst the least reliable reviews online. Someone might prefer a v shaped or harman sound signature, others might prefer neutral etc and then you have people like Amir from Audio Science Reviews who only measures the device and bases his judgment on that and doesn’t tell you how it sounds at all, or people like Crinacle who use a graph to judge everything. Definitely do not trust the majority of reviews for speakers and headphones or other audio equipment like amps, dacs or cables. Try it yourself.

Electronics reviews of things like laptops and phones are fairly reliable because reviewers like Dave2D and Marques Brownlee thoroughly review the device usually and will go over all the functions that matter. This co-relates highly to how people use the device so in general yes electronics reviews are usually quite trustworthy if they review the device thoroughly

Video Game reviews are more of a mixed bag because bigger sites like IGN and Gamespot do not thoroughly review games they just play through them quickly to get a rating so that they can move on to the next game. Smaller sites like Noisy Pixels and Destructoid are generally better in this regard and are more thorough and/or reviewed by fans of that game’s genre. Trust smaller review sites more than bigger review sites for video games.

Movie reviews are similar to video games – the bigger sites like Rotten Tomatoes just aggregate critics views and alot of those critics might be viewing the movie with a different lens than the common audience or might not even care much for those movies because they got a lot of movies to review and want to just quickly give an opinion and move on. So with movies it’s similar Trust smaller movie review sites not Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic.

Food reviews are the most unreliable because everyone’s tastes in food vary! Food might be the most subjective topic out of all these! Definitely do not trust Yelp reviews because everyone’s tastes and standards in food is completely different. “Great food” for some might be “bad” for others and vice versa.

  • Minor update on life, decklist for Hearthstone/Magic, DOS game reviews

Wow, I can’t believe its June already. I feel like I havent done that much this year, compared to previous years. I think thats because I traveled alot and hung out alot with my friends in 2012 (lots of trips and events) and 2013 (lots of house parties and clubbing) and to a lesser degree 2014 as well, but this year I’m more or less alone in Korea. Even though I have friends here, they are usually too busy to hang out, and I haven’t traveled outside of Seoul yet. Some tourist I am, and I’ve been here 6 months already. I should definitely travel soon, else I feel like I’m not doing much with my time constantly staying at home and working.

I went back to San Francisco and Toronto in April and last month, so I got to see all my good friends again. One of my good friends has a baby already and it made me feel so old when I visited him. Am I that much closer to getting married and being a father? Well first I have to find a girlfriend, which is a neverending source of grief for me, so maybe I don’t have to worry about it, but then again maybe I should since I just turned 27 years old a few days ago. Dang. I miss my 24 and 25 year old life, traveling and house parties and clubbing and stuff (see previous post about regrets on not preserving that time better). Oh well, life has to move on I guess.

So yeah these days I’ve been staying at home and playing games. I modded Fallout New Vegas (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/) and I definitely recommend the Weapon mods, High res texture mods, Nevada skies weather mod, EVE lighting mod, Project Nevada, more Perks and Mission Mojave rebalance mod. It brings FNV to 2015 standards.

On another note I’ve been uploading ALOT of youtube videos for dos games and playing Hearthstone a lot more, and conversely Magic the Gathering a lot less. I’ve made a page for it because the Magic list is more or less set, since I don’t play it as much anymore. And I plan to move some of my korean teaching articles over to this site to unify it, since I don’t write any more articles for that site. Sounds good? I want this blog to be the hub for all my projects.

And here are some of the old game playthroughs I’ve uploaded, some of them I haven’t played in as much as 12 years. I also hope to do a video on Diablo 3 Reaper of souls, Starcraft 2 Legacy of void, and Dungeon defenders 2 soon as I played alot of those with my friends.

  • Movie producers must be running out of ideas. A short review of contemporary films.

I seriously have not seen even one original movie the past few years. All recycled pieces of junk with little pieces of filler and regurgitated information thrown about. For example, we must ask ourselves how many more movies starring owen wilson, steve carrel, vince vaughn, luke wilson, jack black, will ferrel and ben stiller must there be (in case you didn’t know, those aforementioned actors always appear in comedies with each other). I’m not gonna bother naming all the poorly-conceived movies that has to (inevitably) star them in it. World trade center is about an event that happened 5 years ago. Sure it shook the world, but 6,000 deaths is nothing when the world has already lost 60 million people during WWII. Another movie capitalizing on recent events in the trend of titanic and pearl harbour. Animated movies like barnyard or over the hedge are just shrek-wannabes if you ask me. John tucker must die is another movie for those teens and preteens just aching to see another caucasian hunk turned jerk who manages to snag 3 dates in one night. I mean seriously, don’t we get enough of that everyday, and we don’t really need a movie made about it do we? Next thing you know, we’ll be seeing a movie documenting mel gibson’s fall from grace or paris hiltons perennial breakups or lindsay lohan’s attempts to divert attention to her. Seriously though, Mr.Spielberg and crew, I really expect better from you.
