  • Why do Korean ultra nationalists hate China and Chinese people? Do Chinese hurt them or something or occupy Korean territory? Their hatred seems excessive.

    Show me these so called ‘Korean extremists’ online or some of their content. Because I’ve seen a lot more Chinese nationalists say things like ‘Korea is a US puppet state’ and ‘Korea claims ___ is Korean’ and ‘Koreans are super nationalistic’ than Koreans who have been those things they claim.

    Below answer from another Chinese person who supposedly thinks that Koreans are all super nationalistic. When I asked this person if they ever met any Koreans or talked to any Koreans about this, they admitted that they had not and it was based on assumptions. And there’s other Chinese posters I have seen online that make BS assumptions about Korea. They usually take one incident or one post from a Korean nationalist (usually from 15–20 years ago) and generalize it and assume that EVERY Korean must be like that. It’s ridiculous.

    All these comments are irrational. All Koreans claim Confucius is theirs? All Koreans claim origin of Chinese is Korea? All Koreans laughed at Chinese dying in an earthquake? Give me a break. Some Korean lady from 25 years ago did something condescending to Chinese so every Korean must be like that? One Korean shooting the Chinese prime minister with a laser light at a ceremony years ago? Guess that means all Koreans must hate China. Distorted reports about China? You mean like the distorted rumors about Korea that Chinese make up all the time online? Korean tour guides talking up their history? Wow imagine that! So I guess Chinese tour guides must be all pretty humble when they are talking about their history right? See how ridiculous all these arguments sound?

    ^ Show me what Koreans (who were FORCED to fight) did to Chinese that was worse than Japan’s Unit 731. I’ll wait. In fact it’s hard to imagine anything that a human can do to another human that’s worse than Unit 731.

    Looks like it’s been Chinese who have been doing most of the nationalistic claiming of Korea’s things or hating on Korea for reasons that are probably not valid.

    Below I have a screenshot of a Chinese girl who literally blocked me on WeChat after I asked her why she hated Korea and grouped Japan and Korea together. She never told me why and just asked me to go read the news. Very vague answer indeed. I assume its because Koreans were part of the Japanese army but that’s not their fault – they were colonized by Japan at the time. And lots of Koreans were slaughtered and died by Japanese hands. A good portion if not majority of sex slaves to Japanese Army were Korean women.

    I lived in Korea before, made many Korean friends, have never heard any of them say they hate China or had a conversation like this where they would outright say they hate China and defriend me because of it. Never happened. Sure there might be some Koreans who dislike Chinese or China but I personally have never experienced or witnessed it, but I have ran into a lot of Chinese (both in real life and online) who hate Korea for irrational reasons. Some of whom told me the reason they hate Korea is because Koreans are super nationalistic or claim that Confucius is Korean etc which I have never heard from any Korean. Go figure.

    The real question should be why do so many Chinese think or believe that Koreans are super nationalistic? Because they saw one Korean post something some crazy claim and then started spreading it online and assumed that every Korean was therefore also making the same crazy claim? I have seen this before. Not only do I believe that this is the root cause of the ‘Koreans think ___ is Korean’ rumour but also the 2002 World Cup (which FYI was almost 20 years ago) led to this whole ‘Koreans are super nationalistic’ rumour.

    Koreans have never invaded China in its history, while China played a major part in the role in splitting up the Korean peninsula and supporting North Korea. Koreans have never banned or boycotted Chinese products while Chinese continue to boycott and ban kpop/kdramas etc even during the COVID19 pandemic Korean government refused to ban Chinese travelers while China banned Korean travelers pretty quickly. Chinese is the second most studied foreign language in Korea after English. So it goes to show that Korea is bending over backwards for China in politics and I’ve never met a Korean who outright hated Chinese, but you see China ban or restrict Korea products, Chinese hating Korea, etc without any good reason. It’s just sad. I wish both countries could just get along cause there’s really no good reason to hate each other (unlike with Japan)

    The reasons Koreans hate or dislike China is because of one of these 3 reasons:

    1. China helped North Korea during the Korean War leading to the current split Korean state and constant threat of nuclear annihilation (as well as the US presence)
    2. Air pollution comes from China and affects Korean air
    3. THAAD deployment, which was a US policy, caused China to boycott and ban Korean goods and entertainment and travelers from Korea, affecting Korea’s economy. That is bullying, pure and simple.

    These 3 reasons are actually rational, unlike the reasons why Chinese hate Korea.

    Edit: some Chinese below have said the reason why Chinese hate Koreans because: 1) they are US Puppet and 2) they were with the Japanese army to which I respond with 1) US was the one who saved South Korea from destruction in the Korean War and 2) Korea was forced to fight in the Japanese army as they were a colony of Japan at the time. In addition, Korea suffered ALOT during the Japanese colonial period too, and a majority of the ‘comfort women’ during the war actually came from Korea. Thats the major reason Korea still hates Japan today.

    However despite Chinese having a history of invading Korea (see: Tang Dynasty war against Silla, Qing Dynasty invasion of Joseon) and of course backing North Korea during the Korean War leading to the currently divided Korean state, Koreans do not harbor any ill will towards China and continues to support China ie.

    Meanwhile despite Korea never invading China in its history or trying to interfere in Chinese business, China and Chinese continue to bully and look down on Korea and Koreans by calling them a ‘US puppet state’ and boycotting their entertainment and spreading false rumors about them like ‘Koreans all think Confucius is Korean’ etc. Tell me does this makes sense?

  • Why are the Chinese so nationalistic?

    1. Chinese people are generally more optimistic about their country than others. 85% of Chinese are optimistic about their country – see this excellent answer already – Robin Daverman’s answer to Why is Chinese nationalism so popular on Quora? While obviously nationalism exists in all countries, it seems disproportionately popular when it comes to questions about China. if 85% of a country’s people are optimistic – yes they are going to be more nationalistic on average than your typical country.
    2. Chinese people generalize Westerners as brainwashed by Western media – and the reason is because a lot of Westerners generalize Chinese as being brainwashed by the CCP. This causes a back and forth finger-pointing exercise between the two factions, each accusing the other of being ‘brainwashed’. The truth is of course, not all Westerners are ‘brainwashed’ – How Popular Is Donald Trump? less than half of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing, We asked, you told us: Most believe Huawei did nothing wrong Most Westerners do not believe Huawei did anything wrong, and only 31% are optimistic about their own country. If Western media/Trump administration was really brainwashing Westerners, they’re doing a terrible job at it. Of course the other side of the coin is not all Chinese are brainwashed either – the truth is somewhere in the middle – but of course the neutral opinions like mine often get drowned by the pro-Chinese opinions so the answers that people see are often the pro-Chinese ones. Also note: a lot of those pro-Chinese answers are actually written by Westerners who lived in China or are sympathetic to China. Ironic right?
    3. Most Chinese people have never been outside their country and their impressions of other countries come mainly from the internet – The Number of Potential Chinese Outbound Tourists Could Double by 2020 to 240 Million | Jing Travel The number of Chinese people with a passport is less than 9 percent (Compared with USA at 42% and Canada at 66%). This is probably related to 2 why so many Chinese people have the false impression that Westerners are all brainwashed to hate China – because they see Western media, they see Quora and some ignorant Chinese questions – and they believe that all Westerners are like that. This actually explains a lot of things. It explains why they think all Americans are nationalistic, that Koreans all do plastic surgery or that korean men look feminine etc because while the absolute number of Chinese tourists is still large (9% of 1.3b is still 120m people) the percentage of the total population who has traveled to another country is still very low, which is why these generalizing impressions have taken hold.
    4. Chinese tend to be very sensitive to any criticism of their country. I mentioned this in my other answer already Tong Zou’s answer to What is your opinion about China and Chinese people? and anyone who has Chinese friends, well we already know not to talk about politics/Tiananmen/Taiwan issues around them because those are very sensitive topics. I am not anti-Chinese nor am I advocating the CCP be replaced yet on a lot of my answers I am being attacked by Chinese people who misconstrue my criticism as attacks on China or Chinese people. Chinese people take these criticisms very personally and get very defensive about it. Again, this has only happened with Chinese people from my experience. I have answers criticizing America, Korea, Japan etc too but I have not received the same attacks from those people.
    5. Backlash for the century of humiliation that China endured against the West, and a result Chinese people feel the need to be even more nationalistic to compensate. Is it fair to lump all Westerners into the same bucket for events caused by British/French/Americans that happened 150 years ago? Probably not, but Chinese often see America/USA = a proxy for Western democracy, so basically whatever they see in America (high poverty rates, undeveloped infrastructure, rampant drug use, election of Trump etc) they equate to the failure of Western democracy. Believe me, its frustrating as a Canadian to be lumped into the same political bucket as the USA as our politics are very different, but to Chinese, USA = all Westerners = all brainwashed to hate China. But yes, this is the main reason why China will do everything it takes to win that trade war against the USA – they refuse to be humiliated anymore, they will be as nationalistic as they need to be.
