Using Korean numbers

Korea has two different number systems. One is used mainly for counting and age, the other is used everywhere else.

In Korean, the first number system is the native korean system, which is mainly used to count things, to say your age, and to say the hour of the time. They are:

하나(1), 둘(2), 셋(3), 넷(4), 다섯(5), 여섯(6), 일곱(7), 여덟(8), 아홉(9), 열(10), 스물(20), 서른(30)

Note that in usage, 하나 -> 한, 둘 -> 두, 셋 -> 세, 넷 -> 네, 스물 -> 스무.

The second system is the Sino-Korean system, and it is used in every other situation from math to money. They are:

영(0), 일(1), 이(2), 삼(3), 사(4), 오(5), 육(6), 칠(7), 팔(8), 구(9), 십(10), 백(100), 천(1000), 만(10000), 억(100000000)

To say any number, just combine the numbers together.
For example, 25 is 이(2) + 십(10) + 오(5) = 이십오(25).
In the other system, it’s 스물(20) + 다섯(5) = 스물다섯(25).

The year 1999 is thus 천(1000)+구백(900)+구십(90)+구(9) = 천구백구십구년 (Year 1999)

Examples

저는 스물두 살이에요 = I am twenty two years old.

맥주 병 주세요! = I’ll have three bottles of beer please!

저는 이십 불 있어요 = I have twenty dollars.

삼십만원 있어요 = I have 300,000 Won.
