Grammar Lesson 4 Korean

잖아요,거든요,나요?,가요? – Korean endings part 1

We just learned a very common Korean ending, 지/죠, and now we will learn some other less often used, but still common Korean endings.

V + 잖아요

1. The ending 잖아/잖아요 is used when the other person knows what you are talking about. It’s equivalent to using ‘you know,’ in English.

그렇게 말하면 내 마음이 아프잖아요.- You know, talking like that hurts me.

V + 거든요

2. The ending 거든/거든요 is use when you are explaining something, similar to using ‘because’ as an ending.

난 그여자 또 만나고 싶어요. 진짜 예쁘거든요. – I want to meet that girl again. (Because) she is pretty.

AV + 나요?

3. 나요? is a polite question ending that is similar to the regular polite 요? ending except its a little bit less direct, and usually requires a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response. So usually this ending is used with ‘Do/Does?’ type questions. 나요? is used with action verbs.

시간이 있나요? – Do you have time?

DV + (ㄴ/은) + 가요?

4. 가요? is a polite question ending that is used the exact same way as 나요? except it is used with descriptive verbs instead (adjectives). For this reason, the verb has to transformed into the adjective form using (ㄴ/은) before adding this ending.

외국 친구가 많은가요? – Do you have a lot of foreign friends?
