How does Gus Williams, the beloved Seattle SuperSonics star who led the franchise to its only NBA championship in 1979, rank among point guards of his era?

Honestly, “The Wizard” as he was called, is a pretty underrated player and nearly forgotten now. He averaged 29 PPG in the 1979 NBA Finals to help the Sonics win a championship – however the FMVP went to Dennis Johnson instead.

At his peak in 1982, he was top 5 in MVP voting. He raised his game in the playoffs and from 1979 to 1984, he averaged in the playoffs: 27 PPG, 24 PPG, 26 PPG, 32 PPG, 23 PPG. He was a prototype of today’s scoring point guards.

I’d put him near the same level as Mark Price or Kevin Johnson – guys that are very nearly close to the Hall of Fame, but right on the edge of it. Tim Hardaway, Maurice Cheeks and Paul Westphal eventually got in despite being on the edge though, so who knows.
