Accident, Updates, Korea, Food, Recording

Edit: Boycott the Hangover 3!!! As many of you know, as long as people keep watching these movies that exploit asian stereotypes, they will keep making more, as I have explained my thoughts about this movie before. Don’t watch it else they will make more!

I posted my first video log about my updates recently here:

My voice is a little raspy here, so here’s the details:

-I got into a scooter accident (that’s a motorcycle, not one of those toys) because I was driving on wet tracks, fell and broke my wrist bone. Recovery time is 10-12 weeks.

-I got Pro Tools 10! So expect to see some better music and video recordings over the next few months as my hands heal up. Side note: I hate that you have to have an iLok usb in your computer at all times else Pro Tools will go nuts. Thats a bit overkill right…

-My California driving test is suspended for now until I can heal my wrist so I can drive again. I hope I don’t have to re-take the written exam…

-Yes, I’m making a Korean app on the side. I want to get a better Korean learning service up there and not have to rely on Google Translate or Naver all the time. Plus, I get to learn SASS, Handlebars, jQuery, Underscore, Backbone and Bootstrap. Expect to see some updates on my github on the next few months.

-Yes, I really want to go to Korea. I have posted before about this in the past, but there’s a reason why most of my friends are international students. I just don’t get along well with Westerners as well as I do with Asians. I mean, I don’t mean to be unfriendly or snobby or anything, I just don’t have a lot to say. Most Americans like to talk about sports or food or other such topics that I’m not interested in. I’d rather talk about programming, or gadgets, or video games. I’d rather shoot some pool, watch korean dramas, or sing karaoke, than drinking beer and watching football. If only Asia had a better work culture, then I would move there right away, its one thing Asians need to improve on. I don’t understand why they can’t just adopt our Silicon Valley culture of flexibility and openness. It would make Asia a much more tolerable place to live in.

-Speaking of food, one thing I noticed here in San Francisco is alot of people are “foodies”. They actively seek out the best places to eat, the healthiest food, etc. One thing people should know about me is I don’t really care about food that much. To me, its just sustenance, but its interesting to see people so into it, uploading pics of food onto Facebook everyday, or posting how much calorie content is in this versus that, or how much better this burger place is than that place. Honestly, I don’t care if its KFC or some fancy free-range hormone-free antibiotic-free grass fed meat, its all the same to me, only the latter is more expensive. Which is just as well, since I don’t gain weight. Seriously, I’ve been stuck at 135 lbs since high school and doesn’t matter if I eat ramen noodles or beef wellington, I’m not gaining or losing weight, nor does it affect my bodily functions. I ate pizza pops every day in high school, and instant noodles / canned pasta everyday in college, and my brain functions fine. I had a perfect attendance record in all my lectures and exams. I also found caffeine in general have no effect on my brain, so I don’t tend to drink coffee much. (Note that eating healthy is a relatively new trend in America; back in the 1950s, food didn’t even have ingredient labels!)

That’s my updates recently, hopefully North Korea won’t go crazy anytime soon…Oh and here’s pics of my recording gear (my living room doubles as my studio):

Sony HMZ-T1 Review

I just recently bought this bad boy:

Sony HMZ-T1

Sony HMZ-T1

Sony HMZ-T1. It’s a fully 3D capable video display headset capable of outputting 720p through 2 OLED lenses. Here is my review.

I live in an apartment so I can’t bring a 42incher in, its just a studio so space is a premium. So I was deciding between this thing and a 3D projector for playing games / watching movies. I decided on this for a few reasons:
1) looks cool, no one else has these and enhances my geek factor
2) 3D projector + 3D glasses + 3D converter is about $1200+ for a decent setup. This is $800 in comparison.
3) this takes up almost no room at all. No room needed for projecting anything either. It’s just a headset.

So having used it for a few days here are my thoughts:
1) It takes a while to adjust the headset so that its comfortable. Mainly, you can’t stand up with this for too long. I can use this with my PS Move semi-reclining, but fully standing up is not possible due to being so front heavy. I mainly use this lying down on my bed, and after 3 hours your forehead will begin to get uncomfortable.
2) Picture quality is pretty amazing. I’ve used the Myvu Crystal viewer before so I’ve used these HUDs before, but these OLED screens are fantastic. Picture is bright and clear. Its like having a 75 inch TV in front of you, but you can still see the edges.
3) Light guard is annoying to put on, and you pretty much always need to have it to block light. So why didn’t Sony just build this in? When would I ever NOT use the light guard? Its annoying to fit that thing in.
4) 3D quality is good. Some other reviewers say its the BEST, and I would say things don’t pop up that much, but its true there’s no ghosting or anything. I haven’t tried other 3D viewers so maybe this is the best and I’m just expecting too much. I watched Transformers: Dark of the Moon, played Uncharted 3 and some scenes were indeed quite immersive. but overall 3D is underused in most movies and games.
5) Audio quality is good. The surround is pretty amazing. There were times I thought MY phone was ringing or someone was knocking on MY door. But it was just the game.
6) Great integration with SONY PS3. I just plug in the HDMI and I’m good to watch movies and play games. You’d most want to use it with a PS3 anyways, I don’t think hooking it up to a PC will be optimal experience.

Overall – is it worth $800? For single guys like me who play alot of single player games and watch movies by themselves and live in a studio – yes this is amazing. You cannot find a 75″ 3D TV and 5.1 SS setup for only $800. On the other hand – if you constantly have friends over, play Wii a lot, watch movies with the gf or what not, this isn’t a good option. Just get a TV or use a computer monitor or projector instead. That’s my 2 cents. 4 stars. The only problem I have with it is the inability to use it standing up or for longer periods of time.
